Racing for 2010
Highwood Cycling's Racing Team is comprised of a multi-disciplined racing squad; regionally based in the Foothills of the Rockies in Southern Alberta and encompassing communities such as Okotoks, High River and South Calgary. It all started in 2004 with a couple of mountain bikers in High River and has since turned into a team of enthusiastic and diverse competitors trying to make its presence felt throughout the cycling scene of this great province.

Be sure to check back and read the 2010 season report for the Highwood Cycling race team, available soon. Strong opening season results did not become dampened by the inevitable occurence of spills, road rash and technical gremlins throughout the 2009 season.
For 2010, Highwood Cycling will continue to support the sport of cycling and it's members in as many ways as possible. Highwood Cycling Race Team competes in various cycling related events across the province of Alberta and B.C. Check out the team and see what we're all about.

Highwood Racing Team

In 2006 the club formed a racing team to compete in the Alberta Bicycle Association (ABA) MTB XC, Road & Cyclocross racing calendar. For our inaugural season we had some satisfying results and managed to end the season on some highs.. 2008 and 2009 got even better...and 2010 should be a continued reflection of the work our team puts into their off-season and pre season preparation. We have grown to include our first women racer's in 2009.

Who are we?

Highwood Racing Team....We are a competitive recreational race team that are members of Highwood Cycling Club. The race team is for those so inclined. However, we are promoting first time racers and trying to form a group of enthusiasts who want to try something a little more up tempo. We have seasoned racers who can share the passion and help the team and it's riders develop and feed that hidden competitive hunger.

We would like to field racers in XC (Cross Country) and the road race series in the 2010 spring and summer season. In addition, look for some of our members to be competing in BC races and mountain marathons such as the TransRockies and Canmore 24 Hours of Adrenalin.

How do I race and what is the cost?

To race in the ABA calendar you must acquire a racing license. The cost for racing is typically made up of the cost of the Alberta Bicycle Association (ABA) racing license and the race entry fees. The license cost varies by age and category. We have been seeking sponsorship and the club received our first sponsor support in the 2006 and new sponsors have provided support for the seasons since then which we hope will help to mitigate some of these costs to members.

Highwood Cycling Race team is proud to have a number of local sponsors. To find out more about our sponsors or to become a Highwood Racing Team sponsor please click here.

For 2010 the license costs are as follows:

$125.00 for those born in or before 1988.

$85.00 Junior riders born 1989 -1996.

$75.00 riders born in or before 1952.

$25.00 per member insurance fee charged by the ABA to affiliated racing clubs is part of your club membership and is covered therein.

Please note all ABA race license applications must be signed by the Highwood Cycling Club president. We will have a race team meeting in March. You can download the ABA race licence and membership application here.

You can also race on a day license for a maximum of 2 events during the season but you will have to pay for insurance at the event usually $10.00 plus race entry usually $30.00 to $40.00. In 2010 some events do not have day license availability.

What do we do?

We train, compete and develop our cycling skills as a cohesive efficient unit...ok, I'm convinced! We race for the challenge, the sheer fun and the prizes...maybe just the "war stories". The important thing to know about racing at the provincial level is the ability of all rider levels and a wide spread of ages to participate in an exciting arena on some of the best single track and roads the province has to offer. All this while developing fitness and skills you would not normally acquire riding just recreationally.
